France coach Raymond Domenech has stated that some of his players could possibly refuse to play in their final match of the group stages of the World Cup following the sending home of Nicolas Anelka.

The Chelsea striker was sent home from the competition after verbally abusing coach Domenech during half-time of France’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico last week.

Domenech was asked whether there was a chance of his squad not playing in their final match, to which he responded “it is a possibility’.

Anelka refused to apologise for his outburst towards his coach, after which a statement was issued by the French Football Federation, back by Domenech.

“Nobody can behave in such a way in the dressing room or elsewhere and high-level sportsmen and women have to lead by example through football,” he added.

“The three or four leaders are players past their prime who will never play a World Cup again.” said FFF general secretary Henri Monteil.

“We had to do something – the French people had a right to know,” added Domenech.

“What I should have said at the end of the message was that I did not support this action.

“With the FFF president and staff members we tried to convince them it was stupid. I disagreed with the document. What they were doing was unthinkable.

“We’ve wasted a lot of energy. There are no words to explain what has happened. I’m hoping we will now have action on the pitch rather than off it.”

“It was almost hallucinatory. This is a psychodrama that will go down in the history of the World Cup. The French team has been reduced to ashes.” stated French newspaper Le Figaro.

Should France play their final match Victor Chandler, BetFred and bet365 give them 11/8 odds of beating hosts South Africa.

There can no be denying that football as a brand is one of the most popular things in the country. Even if you don’t like the game you often can’t be stopped from being drawn into England’s big matches or asking the score when your local team play. It is a massive thing but what makes it so popular?

The most likely is because anyone can go and watch it. This means the love of football is often passed down from generation to generation because it is something that fathers can do with their sons or daughters. It is often the big football families that go to matches etc and they share a love of the game and their favourite team.

Loving football is something that many of us like because it is something that we can enjoy. Liking pop stars and celebrities is all well and good but we can hardly strut our stuff on stage in the hope of being like them. However we can join local football teams and play the game we so much love to watch.

Most of it is probably down to clever advertising and media. Everywhere we read or see we see news on footballers – what their spouses are up to, which team is doing what, who scored which goal. We can also but a massive wide range of merchandise based around football which helps stop us from getting bored of the game!

There is no denying that football is a well loved game and for whatever reason it is a game that our country has taken a hold of and doesn’t seem to be showing any sign of slowing down.

Formed at the same time as the Scottish football, England is actually joint oldest football team in the world. In 1870 the Football association arranged a match between the two teams and this was played on the 5th March of that same year. A return match was played on the 30th November 1872. Over the next 40 years, England played a number of games exclusively with the Home Nations – Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

England joined FIFA in 1906 for the first time and played its first ever games against some one other the Ireland, Wales or Scotland whilst on a tour of Europe in 1908. As a team England did not play in the World Cup matches until 1950. Which they did play they failed to get past the first round when they were beaten by the USA, 1-0.

However this is not remembered much because it was their win at the 1966 World Cup that sticks in the mind of England fans.

There have been a number of England managers and in fact in 1990 there were a total of 4 in a short time. The first non English Manager of the team was Sven Goran Eriksson who managed the team for 5 years from 2001.

Whilst being managed by Sven, England saw a number of successes. These include – qualifying in 2 world cups and the Euro 2004, losing only five competitive matches, rising to a record FIFA No.4 world ranking for the English national team during the 2006 World Cup.

The Manchester United Football Club is probably one of the most recognizable and popular clubs in England. They currently play at the Old Trafford ground in Greater Manchester.

The team has founded over 100 years ago, back 1878 but Newton Heath. It joined the football league some years later in 1892. It has gone onto play in the top division of English football since way back in 1938 with the exception of 1974. In fact the average attendance at the club has been above any other team since 1964 with the exception of just six seasons

Alex Ferguson became manager of the club in 1986 and since then they have won an amazing 22 awards which is what makes them one of the most successful teams in the country.

In both 1999 and 2008 they won the European Cup and came runner up in 2009. They also hold the record (which they share with another team) for the most English League titles (18) and the most FA cup wins (11)

The Manchester United brand has proved to be so successful that it has the highest revenue of any football club and is actually the most valuable club in any sport throughout the word. It is estimated to be worth around £1.136 billion

The ground at Old Trafford where the team plays is huge with the capacity to hold over 76,000 people. Some of the most well known and high profile players have played for Manchester United including the likes of Wayne Rooney and David Beckham. With players like this it is no wonder the team have done so well.
